Inspiration for new art gallery drawn from the surrounding natural environment

A modern gallery that provides a lasting home for the Heysen collection

The Heysen Gallery has been established as a dedicated space for the preservation, protection, and display of the remarkable artistic legacies of Hans and Nora Heysen. Situated at The Cedars, the family’s historic estate in the Adelaide Hills, the gallery provides a permanent home for works of profound cultural and historical significance. The Cedars is recognised as one of Australia’s most important heritage properties, its landscape, homestead, and studio inseparably linked to the story of the Heysen family.

The gallery was designed as a lasting home for the Heysen collection, sensitively integrated within the surrounding native landscape, and built to safeguard the Heysen collection for generations to come. It combines the functions of a modern exhibition and archival space with the practical needs of a place cared for and sustained by a committed volunteer community.

The design draws deeply from its context. Natural materials, earthy tones, and rich timber elements reflect the surrounding environment, creating a building that resonates with the distinctive landscape of the Adelaide Hills. The material palette and textures directly reference the majestic eucalypts that dominated Hans Heysen’s paintings, embedding the building in the same landscape that inspired much of his life’s work. The gallery is both bold in vision and sensitive in execution—an expression of cultural continuity between the artists’ legacy and the land they loved.

Made possible through federal funding under the Adelaide City Deal, the Heysen Gallery represents a lasting investment in heritage, culture, and community. It offers an enduring setting for the immersive exploration of Hans and Nora Heysen’s art, enriching public understanding of their role in shaping Australian cultural identity. More than a place of exhibition, it is a space for reflection, learning, and connection—to art, to history, and to the landscape that inspired it.
